Most of the year, the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden is a must-see DC attraction with phenomenal works of art and sculptures in a meticulously manicured garden. But as the cold air sweeps in and the holiday season draws near, it is the scene of one of the most picturesque ice skating rinks in the city.

Skating under the starry sky, surrounded by twinkling lights and world-class art is a tradition you should plan to repeat year after year. The rink opens this year on November 16, and continues until mid-March. Tickets are sold in two hour time slots, and you can choose to wait until the tail end of your skate time if the rink is busy. Bring your own skates, or rent a pair for just $4. Daytime or evening skates are available seven days a week. A trip to the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink is also a perfect outing if you have visitors in town for the holidays and want to spend the day at the National Mall.
