Explore a Collection of Contemporary Art at the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden
Joseph H. Hirshhorn came to New York City from Latvia when he was just a boy, one of 13 children. By the time he grew into an adult, he’d made a name for himself as a financier, a philanthropist, and a lover of fine art. It was his own personal collection—more than 6,000 paintings, sculptures, and other masterpieces—that formed the foundation for the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden when it opened in 1974.
Although the museum’s collection has grown, it remains dedicated to displaying all types of modern art. In addition to the collection, the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden also hosts rotating exhibits that span all different subjects.
