The Ethiopian Food at Keren Restaurant is Well Worth the Wait

Don’t be surprised if you see a line out the door around dinnertime at Keren Restaurant—that’s really par for the course at this popular Ethiopian eatery. It boasts nearly 800 glowing reviews on Yelp and a 4.5-star average, so its widespread popularity is obvious even online. To understand why it garners so much attention, however, you’ll have to visit in person.

Before you do anything else, Eater DC highly recommends that you order a pot of the signature cinnamon-infused house tea to share. Then, take your time perusing the menu. Customers sing the praises of the veggie combo, a mix of cabbage, spinach, carrot, and potato topped with a blend of lentil sauce and a spicy chickpea sauce known as Shiro. It comes with injera, a flat, soft bread that you tear apart and use to scoop up the food in lieu of utensils. Injera also accompanies the second most popular dish, the Tbsi beef smothered in a fiery sauce.
